I’ll be showing some of my paper mache characters, Hansel & Gretel and The Big Bad Wolf along with some handmade paper pieces.

These handmade paper pieces were created from the proofs of jumbled fairy tale broadsides, and continue the mixing of stories.

Some of the pieces of text and illustrations were left whole during the paper making process. These pieces were then mixed up and used as inclusions in the new sheets of paper. In some cases, I allowed the inclusions to mix together in the vat of pulp. In other instances, I randomly pulled pieces of text and image and helped situate them in the sheet formation. Displayed on a wall, they will create yet another new narrative of mixed up fairy tale characters and scenarios.

Bring your dollars and your zines for trading! We’ll definitely take your dollars, probably your zines, too.

At the panel last month, Amanda Benton, Amanda D’Amico, Erin Sweeney and I set up a small sign maker letterpress with the text “That’s a GREAT idea!” in wood type and showed the panel audience how to print. In the generous spirit of printmaking, participants were welcome to print as many as they wanted so that they could hand them out to others when a great idea was had!

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY and BOOK ARTS [Ages: 13-16]

B&W Photography (AM Session)
This session in black and white photography (using a 35mm camera) includes discussions and demonstrations and will focus on camera basics, composition, and darkroom techniques. At the end of the week, students will have a preliminary understanding of black and white photography and will have created black and white prints to add to their portfolio. Students should bring a 35mm camera with film (a limited number of ACP cameras can be made available on an as-needed basis).
Book Arts (PM Session)
Discover another facet of “literary arts”! Make books inspired by nonsense to celebrate the 200th birthday of Edward Lear, an English artist, poet, and illustrator! Books will be made in all kinds of interesting shapes and sizes, with pop-out pages and more. Campers will explore how stories and images relate. Sequencing and development will be discussed.  Bring it all together in learning different ways to bind books.

I’m excited to announce this new embroidery finger puppet kit! I will have them for sale at Greensgrow Farm this Saturday, May 5, from 9-5. The address is 2501 E. Cumberland Street, Philadelphia, PA. There are over 30 vendors participating, and of course, Greensgrow’s wonderful farm stand will be open as well. If you can’t make it to Greensgrow’s Craft Bazaar, I’ll also be at Clark Park for May Fest and back to Fishtown for the Trenton Avenue Arts Fest! More on that soon.

We printed on our newest press, Charlie, a Charles Brand etching press. One student pulled her first print ever, a single color block print of a handsome egret. The other student had some previous experience and wanted to learn color printing and was inspired by landscapes, so we worked on a multiple block print (3 blocks) and focused on texture. We had enough time to carve and print 2 of 3 layers, and he intended to print the 3rd at home.

Introduction to Linoleum Relief Printmaking

M: $ 90, NM: $105. Materials Fee: $20
Relief printing is the oldest and simplest method of printmaking. This 1-day workshop will explore basic carving and inking techniques using linoleum. Students will learn how to transfer an image to a block and carve the image. Then we will set up the etching press to print as well as practice how to print by hand with a baren or wooden spoon. We will also discuss how to edition a print, and will explore simple relief monotype techniques to add color to prints. A limited supply of tools is available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own.

Two Fridays: March 16 AND March 23, 10:30am-3:30pm
The Wood Type Poster

M: $90, NM: $105. Materials Fee: $25
Posters typically use both text and image and are attention-grabbing and informative. Students will learn how to set up the letterpress to create an individual poster using wood type and linoleum illustrations. We will explore the basics such as ink-mixing, how to use press furniture, printing, and clean up. We will decide on a theme and print enough posters to exchange prints with each other and still have some to take home.

Friday, March 30, 11am-4pm
The Layered Letterpress Print: A Jumbled Collaborative Project

M: $90, NM: $105. Materials Fee: $40
Using wood type, ornaments, and pre-carved linoleum-cuts, we will work to create a collaborative jumbled print. We will experiment with pressure printing, a collage-like technique that offers atmosphere to a print on different types of paper. We will also explore other printmaking tricks such as ink transparency and rotations. All levels welcome.

Saturday, February 25th at PCNJ, 10 am – 4 pm
An opportunity for students to be introduced to many of the techniques the Vandercook letterpress offers. An Edward Lear poster will demonstrate elements and techniques such as: Wood & Lead Type, Lino-cut, Pressure Printing, Rainbow Roll, and probably a few other tricks, too. Attendees will leave with one of the prints created!
